Sania out of French Open doubles, announces engagement

INDIA'S TENNIS sensation Sania Mirza made a exit from the womens' doubles in the French Open on Friday (May 29). Mirza, who had partnered Chia-Jung Chuang from Taipei in her French Open doubles campaign, went down 6-4, 6-7(5), 3-6 to the Polish partnership of Agnieszka and Urszula Radwanska.

Sania Mirza crashed out of the the tournament's singles event on Tuesday when she went down in straight sets to Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan. Mirza blamed her first round loss on lack of match practice following a wrist injury.

On Friday, Mirza's father, Imran Mirza confirmed reports that his daughter was set to be engaged to a long-time friend from Hyderabad saying, “This is to confirm that Sania Mirza is engaged to Muhammad Sohrab Mirza, whose family hails from the city of Hyderabad. Although not related, the two families have had friendly ties for several decades.” The Mirza family, however, clarified that the engagement would not mean an end to Sania's tennis career and that she would continue to play for some more time.
