Sania Mirza Indian tennis star the 18-year-old, who recently became the first Indian woman to enter the fourth round of the US Open Grand Slam, battling her physical problems as well as her own mechanical errors overcame 65th-ranked rival Mashona Washington and became the first Indian in history to win a match at the US Open Grand Slam.

Suffering from a pulled abdominal muscle and an early lead from her American opponent (4-2 up), Sania still managed to pull out a victory, evidence of her growing maturity as a tennis player, and showing that India can compete in sports other than cricket.

This match is held on the Flushing Meadows was a true battle of will, neither of them managing to fully capatolize on the others errors until Mirza pulled the win 2 hours and 13 minutes into the contest.


Sania, the only Indian woman to enter the fourth round of a Grand Slam event, is now just two places behind the top Asian player Japan's Ai Suigyami (908) in 32nd with Peng Shuai (898), just a spot above her as per the rankings released on Monday.

The tennis star went down 2-6, 1-6 to the 2004 Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova at the Arthur Ashe Stadium after she reached the fourth round beating Mashona Washington, Maria Elena Camerin and Marion Bartoli.
